PSHE

“PSHE is the curriculum for life” – PSHE association

PSHE education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up. – PSHE association.

Our PSHE curriculum at Loose is delivered through the use of the Kapow scheme of work, which is an excellent scheme that ensures this sensitive topic is handled with care. We ensure that lessons are delivered in a way that ensures children feel happy and comfortable with the discussions going on in their classrooms.

PSHE education also gives children at Loose Primary the opportunity to learn about their and others' mental health and wellbeing, and teaches some ways to manage our mental health and recognise poor mental health. A growing body of research shows that pupils who are emotionally healthy do better at school. PSHE education helps children and young people to achieve their potential by supporting their wellbeing and tackling issues that can affect their ability to learn, such as anxiety and unhealthy relationships. Children are given the opportunity to recognise different feelings and discuss when we might feel them, with the aim of reducing all the stigma around mental health, and allowing the children to understand that everyone has mental health, and there are people who will support us when we need it.

The social, emotional and mental health needs of all children is what underpins all teaching and interactions at Loose Primary. All staff are aware of the children’s needs, and understand the importance of children’s positive mental health and wellbeing, and its impact on their education. At Loose, we strive to develop and foster an inclusive, supportive and stigma free environment, and this is ensured through our PSHE education curriculum.
