Reading

Reading is vitally important to us at Loose and has an exceptionally high status within the school at every stage of the learning journey. We have worked hard to ensure that Reading is prioritised in two central ways; firstly, that our classrooms and wider school environment foster a love of reading and, secondly, that our children receive high quality reading provision in learning time. Our offer at Loose comprises reading for pleasure, fluency and comprehension making sure that students gain all the skills necessary for them to access and make sense of the world around them.

Fostering a Love of Reading

Here at Loose we whole-heartedly believe in building a culture of a love of reading across the school in order to engage and enthuse children about reading. Appointing Reading Leaders, setting up Reading Reward Schemes and purchasing our Book Vending Machine are all examples of the way in which we incentivise and bring value to reading.

High Quality Provision

In order to deliver high quality reading lessons that are impactful for our children, we have invested in a variety of high quality resources. These are then used to support daily reading provision in the classroom and provide opportunities for consolidation and retrieval of key learning.

Both KS1 and KS2 provide high quality texts to all their children through the use of Oxford Reading Tree banded books which can be matched to children’s reading ages and phonics knowledge. Reading aloud of banded books supplements taught guided reading sessions which take place a minimum of 3 times each week in all classes from Year 2 upwards.

In EYFS through to Year 3, children also have access to our exciting online reading scheme, ‘Bug Club,’ which offers an easily accessible online library of fiction and non-fiction books for children. This ensures that our learners who are beginning their reading journey have the strongest foundations on which to build.
